Abstract
The paper examines the connection between religion, identity and politics in the personality of Makarios Ill (born Michael Christodoulou Mouskos) the Archbishop and the first President of Cyprus. The text will cover the brief historical and political context of Cyprus in the period when the Republic of Cyprus gained independence from the United King dom and Archbishop Makarios Ill became the first president of an inde pendent state from 1960 to 1977. Makarios Ill was Archbishop of the Autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church from 1950 to 1977 and was re garded the Father of the Nation ("Ethnarch") by the Greek Cypri ot s. The paper will primarily cover analysis of the original material - interviews, statements and speeches by Makarios Ill as both Archbishop and Presi dent, as well as secondary literature . We will use the qualitative research method discourse analysis and narrative analysis . The aim of the paper is to emphasize the points of convergence and divergence of religion, identity and politics in Makarios Ill's personality, and to show how reli gious, identity and political components were intertwined in a single person who was at the same time the President (political leader) , leader of the Cypriots Greek and Archbishop (high church dignit ary).
