Abstract

A Risky Escalation Donald Trump’s decision to escalate military action against Iran may prove to be a strategic miscalculation with far-reaching consequences—not only for the Middle East, but for the broader global balance of power. Iran has so far demonstrated itself to be a far more resilient adversary than Venezuela. This is evident not only in the orderly procedures of power transmission following the loss of senior religious, military, and security figures—where clear succession chains are in place even under wartime conditions—but also in the regime’s ability to prevent major internal fractures that could have led to its collapse. Several scenarios for further developments in the Middle East are now possible, as well as a limited timeframe within which the United States may seek to pacify Iran. If this is not achieved within a few months of the start of operations, the conflict could evolve into a prolonged war of attrition similar to the one Russia has faced in Ukraine. Such a development would risk strategic overstretch for the United States and the inefficient expenditure of resources that could otherwise be used more effectively elsewhere.
