Abstract

This paper analyzes the factors that shape emotional closeness to Europe and euroscepticism in Serbia, starting from the assumption that attitudes toward the European Union in contemporary peripheral societies are not primarily the result of rational economic calculations, but rather of ideological and political polarization. The research is based on longitudinal public opinion data collected in Serbia from 2018 to 2025. The analysis comprises multiple survey waves to identify key predictors of emotional attachment to Europe and the likelihood of voting against Serbia’s accession to the EU in a hypothetical referendum.
