Abstract

This text is aimed at the analysis of horizontal and vertical gender segregation in higher education, in Serbia. This phenomenon is to be observed by using relevant literature as well as current statistical data. Gender characteristics connected with the choices of faculty and scientific disciplines were the subject of the investigations which were conducted at the end of the 1980s. Furthermore, the aggregate picture of several generations of highly educated women and men in Serbia were shaped by Census data and it has been used for highlighting gender differences which have existed during the 20th and at the beginning of the 21th century. For a comparative approach in terms of the situation in Serbia, we found relevant the analysis of the indicators which have been applied in the exploration of gender segregation in higher education in the European Union (EU) member states. The differences between women and men regarding their presence in certain educational domains verify horizontal gender segregation. Even though in Serbia, starting with generations of the late 1960s, the percentage of women among doctor graduates had been higher than the percentage of men, vertical gender segregation was recorded through the ratio of female employees in higher education. The fact that gender segregation in higher education exists in countries which have achieved the highest standards regarding gender equality, verifies its resistance, as well as the complexity of resolving it.
