Abstract
The Roma are an ethnicity that has been facing prejudices, stigmatization, assimilation, and discrimination since they inhabited Europe. The prejudices and ―distorted‖ identity recognition of the neighbouring nations had a strong influence on the Roma identity preservation. In contemporary Europe, political initiatives have been launched aimed at contributing to reduced poverty of the Roma, their social inclusion, and suppression of prejudice and discrimination against them. The crisis of multiculturalism and the deficiency of liberal theory vis-à-vis cultural identities undermine this process, which lacks a broader philosophical and legal foundation, as well as social support.
