Abstract

Serbia has been facing a series of serious population challenges for decades. Consequently there is a special need to study the characteristics, deterministic factors, consequences, regularities in movements and expected changes in the foreseeable future for each of them. This is the task of the demographers. In that sense, many questions are imposed. The most significant have to do with the development of an institutional framework and educational basis of demography in our country, the state of discipline, as well as efforts which demographers should undertake in order to impose the findings of the science on population on decision makers. The central part of this paper deals with the consideration of the identified questions. Seeking the answer to the first question is closely linked with the efforts of Miloš Macura to establish demography in Serbia. He was the initiator to incorporate Demography as a separate subject in the program studies of sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade in 1959. He created the study program and became its first lecturer. Miloš Macura is mostly responsible for founding the Demographic Research Center within the Institute of Social Sciences in 1962 and its first director. He launched Stanovništvo (“Population”), the oldest journal on demography on the Balkans, and was the first editor. He participated in the constitution and work of the Committee for Population Research within the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
