Abstract

The aim of this paper is to clarify the current status of euthanasia in the opinion of Christian believers. Differences in the understanding of this phenomenon exist not only among the basic branches of Christianity, but also within them, and even at the level of the narrowest units of the social community. Therefore, it is very difficult to show the current situation in concrete terms. It can only be approximated by emphasizing the polarization in the expressed attitudes and behavior of believers. Consequently, through this work, an attempt has been made to present what is part of Christian teaching and the official views of representatives of the Christian community as opposed to what is being advocated today by believers of certain branches of Christianity. The first part deals with the changes that have taken place on the premises of the greatest Christian population in previous times, thus finding justification for the current status of faith among people. The second part of the paper explains the concepts related to euthanasia, ie. phenomena such as life and death, as well as human dignity from the point of view of the Christian religion. The concluding part of the paper mentions discrepancies between official Christian attitudes and the views of believers, which is reached through many surveys of general public opinion declared to be Christian. Summarizing the contributions of earlier research, as well as what belongs to religious dogmas and religious rules, we see a conflict between what is called individual religiosity and religion.
