Abstract

The efforts of women in Serbia in the 19th century to fight for their place in society were reflected in all areas, and especially in the field of education. Kruna Acimovic (born Dragojlovic) and Leposava Boskovic were the first women to graduate from the Great School in 1891. Despite the resistance of the society, Kruna Acimovic was the first woman to fight and passed the professor’s exam in 1894. After many years of efforts, she became a professor in the First Women’s Gymnasium in Belgrade (1920). In the paper describes the development of women’s education in Serbia, with special reference to the character and work of Kruna Acimovic, the first woman professor in Serbia.
