Abstract
Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are increasingly being applied in the protection, interpretation and presentation of cultural heritage. Digitized objects, 3D models, photogrammetric reconstructions and virtual exhibitions thus become part of contemporary cultural offer and cultural tourism. This development raises the question: whether and under what conditions a digital object can be recognized as an independent *object of cultural heritage, and not only as a digital record or documentation of a physical asset? The paper examines this issue through a comparison of UNESCO and the European approach with the legal and institutional framework and practice in Serbia.
