Abstract

Strategic preference of Serbian society toward sustainable development implies the complexity and the interconnection between societal and demographic phenomena and processes. Focusing on socio-demographic features of women and men as well as gender inequality as relevant issues, the paper tackles a specific aspect of social dimension regarding this development agenda. Gender perspective points more concrete knowledge of demographic, educational and economical potentials as well as pointing out some of the issues which female and male population are faced with. The Strategy of sustainable development clearly implies the politics of equal opportunities for women and men, while gender equality is recognized as relevant segment of this development concept. In terms of such approach, analysing from the gender perspective in this paper is drawn our attention to some of the aspects connected with social position and quality of life of both sexes and to issues regarding population development as an important segment. Besides that, the significance of this is pointed out, emphasizing gender inequality as an acceptable value and as one of the prerequisite for social and demographic sustainable development.
